A 12-year-old boy was arrested and charged in the death of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Northeast D.C. in July, authorities say.

Ahmad Mims was killed after two young people knocked on his apartment door July 11. He was about to start eighth grade at KIPP Northeast Charter School.

Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force found and arrested the 12-year-old suspect Wednesday, police said. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter while armed. Police did not release his name.

Mims’ grandmother told News4 what happened the night he was killed.

“They knocked on the door to ask him to come outside,” Monica Mims said.

Doorbell camera video showed two young males standing in the hallway, apparently waiting for Mims. It wasn’t clear if the suspect was one of these people. The video also showed Mims walking out of the apartment and staring into the camera.

A search warrant affidavit said a witness told police a male dressed in black, with a muscular build, was seen dragging Mims from a house on Rosedale Street NE, where police and rescue crews found the child dead on the sidewalk. Nothing in the search warrant indicated the age of the person seen dragging his body.

The investigation determined Mims was killed inside a home in the 1600 block of Rosedale Street NE, police said Wednesday.

Police found two firearms and 12 cartridge casings in the house, the affidavit said.

“To, like, drag him out like a bag of trash, that just hurts me even more,” Monica Mims said. “Like, a little boy that can think like that, to even drag someone outside after you shoot ‘em.”

She said her grandson had been in a fight at school in recent weeks, but it was unclear if police connected the fight to his killing.

Witnesses told detectives Mims was killed for hitting the suspected shooter’s sister.

Mims loved football, video games and playing outside, his grandmother said.

“He is such a sweet boy,” she said. “I really don’t like to say this, you know. I have 10 grandchildren, but he is one of my favorites. And he clings to me.”
