D.C. celebrated a special milestone for tenants rights Saturday.
The DC Office of the Tenant Advocate celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking the milestone during the annual Tenant Summit.
District officials along with housing leaders and others gathered for the event Saturday. It’s focused on educating D.C. residents about tenant rights and legal protections.
The summit also examined the critical issues facing renters.
Officials said the office has become a model for other areas.
“We’ve come full circle,” Chief Tenant Advocate Johanna Shreve told News4. “We have brought this situation and this conversation to a place where we invited people from Montgomery County to meet with us, as well as New York City. So advocates have come together and are coming together to talk about commonalities in terms of handling the needs of low-income people in this city.”
Those in attendance at the summit were also able to receive a free on-site legal clinic staffed by landlord-tenant attorneys.
