An SUV slammed into a gas pipeline on Ox Road in Fairfax County, Virginia, Wednesday, causing a gas leak and shutting the road down in both directions, police and fire officials say.
The crash happened about 11 a.m. near the intersection of Burke Centre Parkway. Video from Chopper4, which can be viewed in the player above, shows a gray SUV tilted upward on the ballards surrounding the pipeline. Swarms of fire trucks and ambulances are responding to the crash and gas leak.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said there’s a strong smell of gas in the area. A nearby elementary school and shopping center evacuated due to the leak, the fire department said.
Fairview Elementary School is across the street from the crash and the Burke Centre Shopping Center is closeby.
The driver of the SUV was hurt in the crash. Their injuries are not life-threatening, according to police and the fire department.
The circumstances of what led to the crash aren’t clear at this time.
