Road closures close to the Ellipse began Tuesday morning for an event honoring 9/11 victims and heroes.
A 16,000-pound steel beam recovered from the rubble of ground zero in New York is coming to D.C. on Tuesday through the Tunnels to Tower Foundation.
The beam, from the World Trade Center’s South Tower, is nearing the conclusion of its 35-city tour, marking the tremendous losses of that day nearly 25 years ago.
“Steel Across America” will go on display at the White House following an event with President Donald Trump after 10 a.m.
Major roads downtown, including parts of Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, will be closed until 1:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, from 6 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the following streets will be posted as Emergency No Parking:
- 17th Street from New York Avenue to Constitution Avenue, NW
- 15th Street from F Street Constitution Avenue, NW
- Constitution Avenue from 14th Street to 18th Street, NW
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, from 4:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:
- Constitution Avenue from 17th Street to 15th Street, NW
Twenty-five years after the 9/11 attacks, a steel beam recovered from the Ground Zero rubble was brought to D.C. as part of a cross-country tour. The chairman of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation shared a powerful message. “The heroism that was exhibited that fateful day was nothing short of incredible,” he said. News4’s Megan McGrath reports.

- 15th Street from F Street, NW to Independence Avenue, SW
- Lower Pennsylvania Avenue/E Street from 14th Street to 15th Street, NW
- Upper Pennsylvania Avenue from 14th Street to 15th Street, NW (hotel traffic only)
- Constitution Avenue from 15th Street to 14th Street, NW
