A major data center proposal for a Dominion Energy substation and plans for two data centers in Fairfax County has drawn mounting concern from community leaders and nearby homeowners.
About 100 people attended an information session Tuesday evening and made it clear about their passionate displeasure for the proposal on the 34-acre Plaza 500 site on Edsel Road.
“This is our last chance to hold them accountable,” one resident said at the session. “The best option is denial so that they co-locate this substation at the Van Doren substation, or better yet abandon this altogether because a data center should not be going at this site.”
Starwood Capital Group’s project could bring two data centers close to established neighborhoods while the development may be allowed under existing Fairfax County zoning.
The site in the Lincolnia area of Fairfax County sits less than 100 feet from nearby homes.
The electrical substation required to power the campus still faces a public review.
The residents who attended the session with the Mason District Land Committee made their views clear to Dominion Energy representatives.
“What promises are you making to the community? How are you going to abate noise?” one resident asked. “How are you going to make sure that our water is clean and that we don’t need new water sources coming in? How are you going to make sure our electricity bills go down and not up?”
The Dominion Energy substation has already been approved by the state, but it must still go before the Fairfax County Planning Commission.
