All lanes are closed on westbound Route 50 in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Wednesday morning after multiple vehicles crashed and a truck caught fire, fire officials say.
The crash happened after MD-704/Martin Luther King Jr. Highway about 8:30 a.m.
As of 11 a.m., all lanes were still closed. Chopper4 video from about 10:30 a.m. shows the gridlock streching back for miles as crews continued to clean up the scene.
Firefighters rescued one person from the truck and they are in critical condition, Prince George’s County Fire and EMS said.
A hazmat crew was on the scene cleaning up oil that spilled after the crash.
Photos and video show the bright green truck cab collided into the barrier separating the westbound lanes from the eastbound side. The huge metal trailer the truck was carrying turned over on its side in the crash and piles of scrap metal or a simlar material that was inside the trailer appeared to have spilled onto the road.
It’s unclear what led to the crash, and authorities haven’t given anymore information at this time.
