Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of Elon Musk’s children, said Tuesday that the SpaceX and Tesla founder allegedly offered her $40 million to not participate in a documentary about him that premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival.
“I was offered the opportunity not to speak for $40 million,” the 28-year-old former conservative influencer told reporters at a news conference following the premiere of Alex Gibney’s “Musk.” “And so, when you’re offered something like that, it really causes a debate in your head about what your speech means and how valuable that is and why do they want to offer me this amount of money to not speak?”
St. Clair said Musk has a “complicated relationship” with reality and the truth, and decided to take part in the film because she wanted to set an example for her kids “that you should never take being materially comfortable over speaking the truth.”
Musk responded to the claim in a post on X, saying St. Clair “was never offered that and has a history of making false claims.”
St. Clair and Musk welcomed a child together in 2024, but she didn’t disclose Musk as the father until a year later. Musk has 14 children with four different women.

St. Clair said Musk once told her they needed to have “a legion of children before the civil war” — one that she believes he is trying to sow through the social media platform X, which he acquired in 2022.
“What he’s doing with this platform on X cannot be ignored, because he is stoking flames that don’t exist in the real world,” St. Clair told reporters. “He is creating something that is causing real world effects with all of these inputs on X, and I do believe that he is causing deliberate division that may be catastrophic if it’s not regulated or tamed, or if we don’t do our part in putting it down.”
With a runtime of nearly four hours, including an intermission, “Musk” is a portrait of the world’s richest man and an investigation into the scope of his power and influence. Gibney, an Oscar-winning filmmaker who has profiled powerful organizations and people before, from Enron and Elizabeth Holmes to Scientology, told The Associated Press that he started off as a kind of admirer and hoped that Musk might sit down for an interview.
“Ultimately he didn’t want to talk to me,” Gibney said. “Then you start digging into the facts and you follow them where they lead. And where they led for me was to a place that upended the myth, I would say, of Elon Musk as a kind of modern Leonardo da Vinci.”
Instead, Gibney said he discovered that Musk is an investor, not an inventor. “His genius is stock pumping,” he told the AP.
Through interviews with Musk’s former associates and those who knew him well, Gibney said he discovered one reason that Musk aligned himself with President Donald Trump was to stop the numerous federal investigations his companies were under.
“And indeed, Tesla was under criminal investigation. But out of that case, there was a good chance that under a (Kamala) Harris administration, he might go to prison,” Gibney told the AP. “He joked about that on the Tucker Carlson show. I think those were two key motivators that I had initially underestimated. A lot of people clocked it to the woke mind virus. After doing some research, I didn’t see it that way.”
