A Tesla sedan crashed off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and apparently burst into flames Friday afternoon in Laurel, Maryland.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle, U.S. Park Police said. They were not yet able to provide information on the driver’s condition, they said about 5 p.m.
The single-vehicle crash happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the parkway at Fort Meade Road. According to preliminary information, the driver lost control of the car and veered off the parkway, crashing into a stone bridge under Fort Meade Road.
Firefighters were at the scene working to extinguish the fire. More than half an hour after the crash, they were seen spraying a still-smoking vehicle with water. A large grassy area around the crash site was visibly charred.
Because the vehicle was electric, additional fire department resources were called to the scene, Anne Arundel County fire officials said.
The northbound side of the parkway was closed between Route 198 (Fort Meade Road) and MD-32 but has since reopened.
