D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser revealed the city’s master plan for redeveloping the RFK campus Thursday morning.
More than 3,000 comments from residents helped shape the plan that includes housing, parks, recreation and entertainment on 180 acres of land along the Anacostia River, Bowser said.
The development will create 30,000 construction jobs, 2,000 permanent jobs and more than 5,000 new homes with at least 30% of homes designated as affordable, Bowser said.
The master plan now goes to the D.C. Council, which will review it and hold a public hearing on Sept. 30 before taking a vote. D.C.’s Office of Planning Director Anita Cozart urged the council to work quickly so that the plan could be adopted by the end of the year.

In late June, D.C. released draft plans for the community surrounding a new Washington Commanders stadium at the former site of RFK Stadium.
Renderings included with that draft plan show the idea is to have a community with open spaces, parks, retail and housing. Walkability and access to the Anacostia River were essential for many who weighed in.
“We’ve been working throughout the development of this master plan with WMATA and the District Department of Transportation, and in this project, as all projects, having lots of ways for people to get to one place is really important, whether on foot, on bike, you’re in a vehicle, you’re taking transit, you’re taking Metrorail or the bus – all of those are provided for,” Office of Planning Director Anita Cozart said. “So, the big part of the master plan is making sure that there is space for those.”
The plan included a space for a grocery store and as many as 6,500 new houses with 30% of those houses dedicated as affordable.
With the unveiling of a draft plan for the community surrounding the new Commanders stadium, some residents have concerns. News4’s Jackie Bensen reports.
The community will develop around the stadium after it’s built, Cozart said.
Earlier this month, the Commanders released images of what the inside of the stadium will look like. A unified seating bowl, seating angles and the roof design will work together to make it one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL once it’s complete, the team said.
The stadium is designed to hold more than 70,000 fans and is expected to be finished by 2030.
