A D.C. firefighter was seriously hurt in an accident while responding to a report of a fire Thursday in Southwest D.C., authorities say.
The firefighter was flown to a trauma center after being injured at South Capitol and Galveston streets SW, DC Fire and EMS said.
The department said a crew was responding to a report of a structure fire at about 1:50 p.m.
“While on the scene, a firefighter was struck by a ladder truck and sustained serious injuries,” they said in a statement later Thursday afternoon. “The firefighter received medical treatment and was transported to an area trauma center by helicopter. The firefighter is currently in stable condition.”
A source familiar with the investigation told News4 that two trucks arrived at the gate to a complex at the same time and both stopped. The firefighter jumped off a truck, grabbed a ladder and was walking when the driver turned the corner and the back tire sucked the firefighter under.
The firefighter was seriously hurt but had no broken bones, the source said. The truck had been in reserve but was brought back into service for July 4.
An investigation is underway.
A firefighter was hurt in August 2017 in an accident that also involved two trucks responding to an emergency.
