A Maryland boy and his family had a particularly terrifying, stormy Thursday night when a huge tree toppled over on their house and trapped the 12-year-old in his room.
Andrew Carter saw the tree fall into his house on Wren Court in hard-hit Kettering about midnight as his son slept in his bed.
“I seen the tree toppling over, so I just darted up to my son’s room,” Carter said. “My wife’s screaming.”
But there wasn’t much he could do. The weight of the tree and debris was too much.
“Look up, you see the roof falling on top of you, and me as a dad, I’m trying to support and help the wood from being on his stomach, and I couldn’t lift it,” Carter said.
When first responders arrived, they got the boy out within minutes.
“It was a matter of inches that they were able to clear one of the structure beams off him and then slide him out,” Prince George’s County Fire & EMS Asst. Chief Jonathan Bender said.
Carter said his son went to a hospital as a precaution.
“No physical harm at all,” he said. “However, I’m sure it will be a little bit different going to sleep next time. We have to get him a little help for that, but he’ll be OK. One day at a time.”
Likely not many of the neighbor kids made it to school today, either. Prince George’s County Public Schools were closed Friday because of storm damage in the community.
