All three airports in the D.C. region ranked near the bottom of new airport satisfaction ratings.
JD Power asked about 25,000 travelers to rate their experiences at North American airports. Points are given for things like ease of travel through the airport; terminal facilities; airport staff; and food, beverage and retail shops.
Locally, Reagan National Airport performed best, finishing seventh worst.
“DCA is somewhat of a constricted space airport,” said Michael Taylor of JD Power. “It’s very hard to get as many passengers through that building as the footprint allows.”
Right behind DCA is Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, which Taylor said can be tough to move through from terminal to terminal.
And Dulles International Airport ranked fourth worst.
“It’s a wonderfully executed architectural marvel that was built for a different age,” Taylor said. “And it’s just not suited to today’s air travel.”
The Airports Authority and BWI told News4 they take customer feedback very seriously and are constantly working to make upgrades.
All three airports either recently completed renovations or are planning major renovations.
Tampa International was rated as the top large airport in customer satisfaction. Minneapolis Saint Paul was rated as the top mega airport.
