U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy announced on Friday that he has been discharged from the hospital after suffering a stroke last weekend.
Murphy, who had been hospitalized at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, said on Friday that he suffered a small bleed in the thalamus region of his brain.
He also said that he will miss the next several weeks of votes in the Senate as he continues his recovery.
“I want to be direct with you, so here is my diagnosis. Last Saturday afternoon, I felt something was not right with my body and called 9-1-1 out of an abundance of caution, and Iām glad I did,” Murphy wrote in a statement.
Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, confirmed that Murphy suffered a small hemorrhagic stroke.
“He has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation,” Suarez said.
Murphy said he will be spending the next several weeks at a rehabilitation center after he was discharged today.
The 53-year-old senator began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Saturday, according to an earlier statement from his chief of staff. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and treatment.
āThis has been a scary experience for me and my family, and I appreciate the continued respect for our privacy,” he said.
Murphy said that he has been staying engaged with his team and colleagues remotely and that his staff continues to ensure the work of his office continues uninterrupted.
āI want to extend my deepest thanks to the excellent doctors and staff at Johns Hopkins who have treated me and cared for my family,ā he said.
Murphy has represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate since 2013.
