Next month marks 25 years since 9/11. After the terrorist attacks, thousands of people worked around the clock to rebuild the Pentagon.
Now, 25 years later, one of those engineers is hoping to bring his former colleagues together for a reunion.
Engineer John Trujillo was at the Pentagon on 9/11 and had to evacuate. He said he and his colleagues there were like family.
The day after 9/11, they went right back to work because they had to get communications back online and start assessing the damage.
Trujillo said they would often start their day at 5:30 a.m., and they became extremely close as they worked on the renovations, which had been going on even before 9/11.
After the work was all done, many folks moved on to other jobs and spread out around the country. It’s why Trujillo is now planning a three day reunion event Sept. 11 to pay tribute to everyone who was impacted.
“We knew we had to get things working to take care of our country,” Trujillo said. “Most people don’t know about us, so what I’m trying to make sure is that our story is going to be told still and that I bring back the people that were working there so we can remember what we did and what we went through.”
Trujillo said he has former colleagues coming from as far as Hawaii and California for the reunion. He’s hoping to get about 300 people together in September.
