A mother and daughter were killed after another car struck theirs while driving on the wrong side of I-270 in Bethesda, Maryland on Saturday, according to Maryland State Police.
State troopers said they responded at around 6:46 p.m. to the area of southbound I-270 just south of Democracy Boulevard after receiving a report of a two-vehicle crash.
Police said a Ford Mustang was driving in the wrong direction on I-270 and hit a Toyota sedan head-on.
Shamima Begum, 46, and Areebah Jahin, 23, were passengers in the Toyota and were pronounced dead. The 62-year-old driver and a 8-year-old passenger in the car were taken to nearby hospitals for their injuries. It is not yet clear how serious their injuries are.
Jose Nolasco, 32, was identified as the driver of the Ford. He was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries on Saturday, according to police.
Investigators believe driving under the influence may be a contributing factor to the crash, according to police. The crash is still under investigation.
Nolasco is charged with gross negligent manslaughter, homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
He has been released from the hospital and was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Center where he’ll appear before a court commissioner, according to police.
Lanes on I-270 were closed for five hours as police investigated the crash.
