The Montgomery County Police Department is disbanding its Alcohol Initiatives Unit, they confirmed to News4.

The unit is responsible for keeping drunken and impaired drivers off the roads. The department cited “reduced staffing levels of sworn police officers and the operational needs of the department.”

The assistant chief told News4 employees working in the unit will be reassigned to vacant positions within the department.

“The MCPD recognizes the impact that impaired driving has on the community and the importance of impaired driving and alcohol enforcement, and is committed to continued enforcement, both through the continuation of the Holiday Alcohol Task Force and the Summer Alcohol Task Force, as well as the through the implementation of frequent alcohol enforcement saturation and checkpoint details to be staffed by MCPD and our regional partners,” Asst. Chief David McBain said in a brief statement.
