Metro plans to install clear screens running the length of platforms on the Red Line to keep riders safe.
The transit agency shared renderings Tuesday of how the 5-foot-7-inch-tall screens would look at indoor stations and outdoor stations.
Metro says it has had dozens of people trespass on tracks so far this year and, unfortunately, 10 fatalities on the tracks. Sometimes riders intentionally get on the tracks.
At a recent board meeting, Metro GM Randy Clark talked about the need for the screen doors.
“What that’s ultimately going to allow is people not getting on tracks,” he said. “We have an engineering solution that’s been around for almost 20 years around this world to use and prevent that.”
Cost will be a concern, and Metro hasn’t put a final dollar amount on the project, but it would likely be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The earliest it could happen is 2028, Metro said.
The Metro Board will debate the proposal at a meeting Thursday.
