Two students were taken into custody at Magruder High School in Montgomery County on Thursday morning – one with a BB gun and another with a knife, authorities say.
Students are safe, but the school was locked down during the second week of the school year. Montgomery County police say the incidents were not related.
The student with the knife will not be charged, police said. They described him as “very cooperative” with school officials and said he handed over the knife immediately. Police said they’re leaving his punishment up to school officials.
The 15-year-old student with a BB gun was “not cooperative” and got into a physical altercation with a school security officer, police said. No one was hurt, but charges against the student are pending for assault and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.
News4 spoke with a Magruder student as he left with his parent.
“I was just scared that I was gonna get hurt, so I decided to leave,” he said, adding that the new cellphone policy made him worry that he “wasn’t gonna be able to at least tell my mom and dad that I loved them if I got hurt.”
In 2022, a Magruder student shot and wounded a 15-year-old classmate at the school. He received an 18-year sentence that began in a youthful offender program.
Magruder returned to normal operations just before 10 a.m. Thursday.
