More than 200 people gathered in a church hall in Lanham Tuesday night to demand justice for Tawfik Haqq.
The 33-year-old was shot and killed by a Prince George’s County police officer in August.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office, which is conducting the investigation into the shooting, has just released body and dash cam video from officers at the scene.
This clearest video from Aug. 21 around 11:30 p.m. — when the shooting happened — is from the fixed dashboard camera of what investigators refer to as “a witness officer.” It shows officers following a dark-colored Tesla being driven by Haqq down Reamy Drive in Suitland. It’s a narrow dead-end street.
As the Tesla appears to be making a U-turn in front of the cruisers, moving at what appears to be a slow speed, Officer Colin Davis, on foot, can be heard yelling “He’s trying to run,” and then fires into the driver’s side window.
“If the car is moving past you, you have no grounds to shoot at the driver. That’s administering the death penalty for something he didn’t do,” said Billy Murphy, the family’s lawyer. “Bang, bang, bang, bang! All aimed at Tawfik. Three hit him and killed him.”
Until he changed his name shortly before his death, Haqq was known as Bernard Gibson III, which is how most of the people who gathered for a vigil knew him and remembered him.
His father, Bernard Gibson Jr., described his gutwrenching reaction at seeing the video.
“Watching him on that video, seeing what happened to him, his life was just taken from him,” he said.
In a reply to News4’s request for comment, Prince George’s County police released a statement that said, “In the first few hours after this incident on August 21, 2026, the PGPD communicated with the community via social media providing our preliminary understanding of the facts surrounding this shooting. The PGPD also immediately notified the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division IID) after the shooting occurred. We have been and are committed to fully cooperating with the IID as it carries out its independent investigation into this incident.”
Gibson family attorneys said they will be filing a lawsuit.
