Commanders fans in D.C. will be able to rep the team on their license plates.

The D.C. Council gave initial approval for the Washington Commanders Motor Vehicle Identification Tags Amendment Act of 2025 after a legislative meeting Tuesday.  In a first reading, the council unanimously voted yes.

The bill, introduced by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, authorizes Mayor Muriel Bowser to commission the design of a license plate that “demonstrates support for the return of the Washington Commanders football team to the District,” with their homecoming to the RFK Stadium site.

The bill also dedicates proceeds of the plates to the State Athletic Activities, Programs and Office Fund, which supports youth sports programming.

DMV Director Gabriel Robinson testified before the council June 4 in a public hearing, where he expressed support for the bill.

“Specialty plates are an important way for residents to express community identity and support meaningful local causes,” Robinson said. “Washington Commanders continue to hold a deep historical and cultural significance for many District residents, and interest for this specialty plate has been clear for several years.”

The bill says residents will pay a one-time application fee of $25 and a display fee of $20 every year after. It joins the ranks of other specialty sports team tags in D.C., including a Washington Capitals 2018 Stanley Cup Champions tag and a Washington Mystics 2019 WNBA Champions tag, as well as general tags for the Washington Nationals and Wizards, which all cost the same.

The bill will now move through a final reading, mayoral review and congressional review before becoming law.
