Three people were killed in a crash on I-66 in Fairfax County Sunday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police.

At about 4 p.m., a Honda Pilot hit the back of a truck that was transporting oxygen tanks on the westbound express lanes. The truck had stopped in the right travel lane, according to police.

After the crash, the Honda caught on fire and the three people inside the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

A Toyota SUV was also involved in the crash, according to a preliminary investigation. It is unclear how but police say it was involved in the moments leading up to the collision.

The drivers of both the Toyota and the truck were charged with reckless driving, according to police.

The express lanes were opened after 11 p.m. on Sunday. The crash is under investigation.
