Two men are dead and another is in critical condition after their coworker opened fire on them at a business in Manassas, Virginia, police say.
The suspect, 37-year-old Marvin Grant, went to work Wednesday morning at United Rentals at 9415 Wellington Road and told a coworker that three people were going to die, Manassas City Police Chief Douglas Keen said.
“There was some kind of altercation this morning,” Keen said. “He then pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot the three victims.”
The victims were rushed in critical condition to a hospital, where two of them died of their injuries later in the morning. Police identified the victims who died as Richard Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33.
An online fundraiser for Serrano’s family says he was a devoted partner and father to a 10-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl.
Keen said he personally knew Lamot, a father who coached youth football in Fauquier County for years.
“September’s been a rough month. We lost a 16-year-old. Now I lost somebody I actually coached youth football with. And knowing what his commitment was and knowing his children and now fatherless, it hits home. It hits home for our community,” Keen said, referring to a shooting earlier this month that killed a 16-year-old girl in Manassas.
The third person who was shot is stable but will need to undergo surgery, Keen said.
A man suspected of shooting three of his coworkers — killing two — at a business in Manassas, Virginia, is dead after shooting himself, police say.
A statewide manhunt for Grant came to end hours later on Interstate 81 in Augusta County, police said.
Police had tracked the suspect using technology, and a Virginia state trooper spotted Grant’s car on southbound I-81, police said.
Troopers tried to stop Grant after his car pulled into the rest area at the 232-mile marker, police said. Grant got out of the car, but then got back in and kept driving southbound on I-81, according to state police.
Then troopers initiated a chase before Grant pulled over on the side of the road at the 227-mile marker. State police said they brought in a negotiator after seeing Grant had a gun.
The standoff lasted for about an hour before the suspect shot himself, state police said. Grant was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Virginia State Police said no troopers fired their weapons.
The shooting at United Rentals happened in a garage area of the business. Keen said at least eight employees were there at the time.
He said there was no clear motive yet.
“That brings no relief to our victims’ families. We’ve got to figure out what happened here, what caused this,” Keen said.
During the response and subsequent manhunt, police told people to avoid the area and stay indoors as officers investigated. Officers blocked off access to Wellington Road and the Route 28 Bypass as they searched the area.
Nearby schools were placed on lockdowns early Wednesday morning. Those lockdowns have since been lifted. Students at nearby Jennie Dead Elementary School were redirected to Metz Middle School.
