But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/tag\/diet-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maintaining balance<\/a> and reducing the likelihood of falls is key to staying independent and active, as well as completing daily tasks.<\/p>\n<p>A short test that calls on you to stand on one leg for 10 seconds can help estimate not only lifespan but how mobile you\u2019ll be over the years. And if you can\u2019t pass it right now, don\u2019t worry \u2014 there are ways to improve your balance and, eventually, reap the anti-aging benefits.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-nbc-section-heading\">Fitness tip of the day: Monitor your balance for healthy aging<\/h2>\n<p id=\"anchor-cb33e7\">Here\u2019s how to perform the 10-second balance test, according to TODAY <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/tag\/health-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health<\/a> editor and certified personal trainer Brianna Steinhilber.<\/p>\n<ul id=\"anchor-391ee4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remove your shoes or switch to a pair of flat shoes.<\/li>\n<li>Stand with your feet hip-width apart.<\/li>\n<li>Lift one foot off the ground. Don\u2019t let it touch your standing leg.<\/li>\n<li>Hold for 10 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat on the other side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"anchor-e2cccb\">Some wobbling is normal, so if needed, keep your eye on something stable and hold your arms out to your sides, Steinhilber said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-nbc-section-heading\">Why it matters<\/h2>\n<p id=\"anchor-b704bb\">How good you are at balancing is \u201ca reflection of how well multiple systems in your body are working together, things like muscle strength, neuromuscular control, vision,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/proprioception-exercises-rcna242107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proprioception<\/a>&nbsp;and even brain health,\u201d Steinhilber explained.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b1f012\">In fact,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/56\/17\/975.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2022 study<\/a>&nbsp;of 1,700 people between 51 and 75 years old found that those who couldn\u2019t stand on one leg for 10 seconds had an 84% higher risk of death over the next 10 years compared to those who could.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7a297f\">\u201cIt may sound scary, but there\u2019s good news,\u201d Steinhilber added. \u201cBalance is something that we can train and improve over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-nbc-section-heading\">How to get started<\/h2>\n<p id=\"anchor-59ee3c\">If you\u2019re unable to complete the 10-second balance test initially, Steinhibler offered these tips:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"anchor-5e5964\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with just a few seconds per leg and build up to 10 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>For extra stability, lightly rest the big toe of your lifted leg on the ground or on the ankle of the standing leg.<\/li>\n<li>Hold onto something, like a wall or table, for stability and try to rely on it less over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"anchor-3b586e\">Once you\u2019ve mastered the test, you can increase the difficulty by holding the pose for longer than 10 seconds, or closing your eyes or crossing your arms over your chest.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2d9263\">No matter your fitness level, staying consistent will improve your balance, Steinhilber says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This story first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/10-second-balance-test-longevity-trainer-tip-rcna352783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeared on TODAY.com<\/a>.
